5 Tips to Improve Your Performance as a Freelance Writer

You have started the career of a freelance writer and now you notice that nothing is like you thought it would be. When starting to write for money from home, you think that you should do almost nothing to remain effective and productive.

You just need to write and find clients. However, over time you notice that the writing process becomes more and more complicated. You may have several clients and all of them are ready to give you many orders so that you can earn more money but you understand that you cannot cope with these tasks. You have no time and sometimes even no passion for that.

Why does this happen? The reasons are multiple. But we know how to help you deal with them! In this article, we have collected 5 effective tips to improve your performance as a freelance writer. Just try them and you will see how they change the way you work!

1. Take one order at a time

Many freelance writers, especially those who have no experience in this field, try to take many orders at once. They find more and more clients, promise them to cope with the tasks in the soonest time but as a result they have no time to do them in a good way or to do them at all.

If you want to improve your performance in freelance writing, we recommend that you forget about taking many orders at least for some time. It is better to take one order at a time and devote all the time that you have to it. Thus, you will be able to learn to perform more tasks, to feel more confident with deadlines, and to have more time for other work.

2. Create a schedule for your work

If you always miss some orders or just forget about something that should be done (especially if you take small orders that take a couple of hours to work on), you need to create a schedule for your work. Besides, if you are a freelance writer, perhaps you face a problem of getting distracted by family, phone calls, and house work. If you notice that, we recommend that you include these points to your schedule as well. When your day is scheduled properly, you have enough time for everything including doing your job and having rest.

3. Become a boss for yourself

A boss is a person who controls you and tells you what exactly you need to do right now and how to get the desired results. Besides, a boss will tell you when you have free time and when you have to work harder. So, make sure that you have done your best to become a real boss to yourself and control and organize your work properly.

4. Become a mentor

If you want to increase your performance as a freelance writer, you need to become a mentor. Find several young freelance writers who need someone who will tell them how to organize and structure their work, where to find clients, and what to do to reach better results. It is a well-known fact that if you want to understand something better, you need to start to teach that. So, if you have noticed that you have problems with organization, you need to become a mentor and explain to other writers how to deal with this problem. By doing this, you will be able to get rid of your own problem!

“My mentor said, ‘Let’s go do it,’ not ‘You go do it.’ How powerful when someone says, ‘Let’s!’” – Jim Rohn

5. Set proper priorities

Prioritizing is a crucial skill for any freelance worker. The matter is that when you take freelance writing orders, you choose the time to perform them depending on your preferences and rarely think of what is more important and what tasks need your urgent attention. However, if you have several orders, you need to understand how to work with them to present the best results. Estimate your deadlines and check whether you have the resources for all your tasks. These will be the determining points for your prioritizing.

Being a freelance writer is a challenging but rewarding job. So, if you want to achieve success here, you just need to do your best to improve your skills and start to perform better. This will help you organize your work, get more orders, and find more clients. Invest into your work and you will enjoy these benefits in future!
