  1. I want to, really, I try, but How? I’m mostly fit and thin, but even going to sleep earlier, cutting TV, etc…. all exercise is so painful that it doesn’t increase focus, Dopamine, and Serotonin for me. I hate every grueling minute! How may I move past all that pain to get to where others are?!

    • Start by reading a book by Stephen Guise called Mini Habits. I to hate exercise and it changed my life like no other book has… Also I find I have to engage in activities I like. Dancing, martial arts, hiking… The gym just doesn’t cut it for me. I too gave been thin my whole life so if you are like me you have to stay on a regular exercise regime for the endorphins to actually kick in and work. One, two, or even four days won’t cut it. It’s because you have a sluggish lymph system. In order to get those other chemicals really going you need to clear your body of toxins through a healthy lymph system. That takes a few days if you don’t have any physical activity in your life. The only way to get the lymph stem moving is through muscle contraction so try yoga as well. Not as grueling as the gym but can really help get lymph moving in a gentle way, then move up to things that you enjoy that are more exerting.

  2. Great video. Waking up early starting your day early makes you more productive and is very healthy for your body. Inspirational video, thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi, I couldn’t agree more, yes I wake up very early and I feel that it has helped me a lot to be more productive, I go to work on time, I have done everything that needs to be done at home, I guess i just need to do some minor changes in my 5 am habit like exercising, that would probably boost my entire body system and make me a lot more productive for the day. Thanks for sharing. Great post.

  4. I have been waking up at 5.50am am every day because I have to get my kid to school on time for the past two years, but that has not become a habit yet. I wake up with the alarm and wake up only because I have no choice. On the weekends, I seem to slack and struggle to wake up at the same time. Why is not becoming a habit ? Why is it not becoming easier?

    • Have a read of my earlier post, but essentially mental attitude is one thing and physical health/constitution is another. I have had patients who have had to get up at 5am for their jobs for 20 years plus and still wake up grumpy, tired, unmotivated yet they are still getting “enough” sleep. Your health of the liver and kidneys plays a major role in your ability to get up fresh and be motivated. For example, when you wake up , whether with an alarm or not, you should be able to clench your fist as strong as you can when you do it in the middle of the day. If it is weak and feeble, your liver is weak and feeble. And with that , your planning will be weak and feeble, which is a function of the liver. Sorry if this advice does not resonate with “addicted to success”, but the positive solution, is, to focus on improving physical health to influence the mental… acupuncture , herbs, exercise , meditation etc Work on improving your constitution.

  5. I used to sleep in, hit the snooze button half a dozen times & then crawl out of bed grumpy. A gamechanger for me was the free 10-day Vipassna course, where I woke at 430am every day to learn meditation. After completing the course, I wondered how long I could keep the habit up, in the “real world” of work, bills & family… a week? A month? Answer: five years so far in #5amclub. Once you’ve done it for 30 days it becomes sooooo much easier 🙂 Sunrise meditation is an ideal way to start the day, and there’s nothing good on TV after 10pm anyway 🙂

  6. I remember when I wanted to wake up at 5 am so bad to get my day started better. I tried and for the life of me, I couldn’t do it! I was about to say, “eh, I can’t do this,” and just put it off. Instead I targeted 6 am. I was able to do 6 am just fine, a month later, I tried 5 am again and actually did it by applying the alarm technique that Robin talks about. Now, just today I was up by 4:45 with no alarm and ready to start my day off right. It’s been a game changer for me…specially with a family this is truly my holy time.
If you really want to achieve this, find a way.

  7. I’ve been getting up early everyday for the past 7 years and its really does make a difference. I’m usually up at 3am with no problem. I get so much done because there are no distractions that early. Its just me and my work!

  8. I would like to present a different view on Robin’s take that will power is at its strongest at 5 am -6 am in the morning. ( Sorry Robin, but I couldn’t find any scientific evidence for that!)
According to traditional Chinese medicine theory each major organ in the body, heart , spleen, kidney etc has a two hour peak period which is referred to as the Chinese Clock in Chinese medical terms. 5-7 am is actually the time of the large intestine and hence the “ideal” time to have a bowel movement. The opposite time 5-7 pm is the time of the kidney. The Kidney has qualities attributed to it including motivation to work hard and “will power”is a function of the kidney.
The kidney is actually at its weakest ebb at 5-7am !! Hence from a acupuncture practitioners point of view, people who can’t get up and feel motivated to work in the morning , plan etc have an energy imbalance of the kidney. This is more commonly referred to as deficient kidney energy. Perhaps if readers and Joel are interested I could comment more and give some helpful tips for improving that morning energy according to traditional Chinese medicine theory so upcoming entrepreneurs can actually get up in the morning. Because I know if you are kidney energy deficient and even though you may have all the desire and reason to get up early in the morning, if you do, you will feel tired and you will stay tired tired for the day, be less productive , irritable and soon give it up. The reality is , that people who are born with strong constitutional energy of the kidney, are likely to be more successful. I am sorry to say, people are not born equal.

  9. What if you have 2 small children and run a business and a wife. This makes it hard to do this. I am up at 3 every morning, but I am exhausted by the time I get home. Then I have to show attention to the children and wife.

Solution? I know what u r gonna say…..just tell them you need “your” time. Sounds good in theory.

    • Dear Mr. George,
Miraculously without discriminating god has given everyone’s 24 hours a day, whether its poor or rich; employee or business man. Its up to you how you manage your time without losing your health.

  10. I agree with these steps buuuuuuuuuut what about if you have kids, wife and business. Very difficult.
