Here are the 3 mindsets that will increase your income, value and happiness.

1. Goals aren’t about what you get, they are about who you become

I had a dream of publishing my first book with my favorite publishing house. I covered my room with hundreds of affirmations on 8×11 paper. I even put one in front of the toilet, that way I was always thinking about my goal!

Miracles began unfolding and friend of mine even made an introduction to the founder of the publishing house I dreamed of! My goals were coming true just by covering my wall in affirmations!

The founder invited me over and we hit it off! That’s it! I made my dreams a reality! I was published!

Two weeks later I got an email about my book. The CEO was writing me to inform me they were NOT going to be publishing it—that I should self-publish instead.

I was furious!

My dream was denied AND I had to take down hundreds of affirmations on 8×11 paper that said I was so thankful this company published me!

Painfully, I had to print the books myself, do my own PR, and sell the books on my own.

I printed 5,000 copies, filled my car with books and drove across the country. I spoke anywhere I could—sometimes no one would come.

I stopped people on the street and asked them to buy my book. I knocked on stranger’s doors and had it shut it my face when I asked them to buy it.

A few months later my book picked up traction, sold 10,000 copies in a few months, and made it to the top 300 overall on Amazon! Then I got invited to do a TEDx Youth talk!

Then Penguin made an offer on my second book, The Purpose Principles!

My dreams of making a living and difference as a writer were born! Born out of not reaching my original dream of publishing with the company I always wanted.

Now I see what Henry David Thoreau (who I hated to read in high school) meant when he said, “What you get from a goal is not as important as who you become.”

Had I gotten that publishing deal with my dream company, I would have never become someone who learned how to do my own PR, sell my books, go door-to-door, and make a dream a reality when all plans had failed.

When your dreams are stalled. When doubt creeps in. When you face failure. When your limits are tested. Ask yourself, “Who must I become? Who do my dreams need me to become?”

2. “Work harder on yourself than you do on your work.”

We do not get paid for time.

We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace.

We get paid for value.

Not for time.

Someone says, “Well I make $30 a hour.”

But that’s not true—if it was you could just stay home and watch movies with your favorite pajamas on, and have them send you the money hourly.

You get paid for value.

Is it possible to become twice as valuable to the marketplace by working twice as hard on yourself?

Could you become three times as valuable, and make three times as much money just by who you can become?

The answer is yes.

If you study harder. If you put more time into your character. If you become happier and more positive. If you have more energy… You will become more valuable.

When you are more valuable, you are worth more.

It could take a minute to become even more valuable.

But the way to make more money is to become more valuable. You become more valuable by working harder on yourself than you do on your work. It’s not about the hours you put in, but the energy you put out.

It’s about Inner-hustle. That desire to find out who you are and become better as a person. It’s about pushing to know what powers you are made of within yourself.

3. The main measure of success is how happy you are when you aren’t working

Happiness probably doesn’t come from racking up fat cash and growing a huge business. At least that’s what the studies say!

For the last 60 years annual income per person in America has drastically increased, while happiness has stayed the same. The difference in measured well-being between someone who makes $60,000 a year and $50,000,000 is more or less the same.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that when you step away from building your business and getting all you want, you can find happiness too.

Perhaps you can look to find passion in small things. Have you lately? Have you made someone smile today? Did you exercise? Did you stop and ask the cashier how their day was going? Have you been a good friend, a good lover? Did you think about all the amazing things in your life outside of work?
