10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Quitting Your Job

Admit it? You’ve wondered if you should take the plunge.

You detest working for an unappreciative company every day, you’re un-challenged, and you have no chance of getting promoted, no matter how much you bust your butt.

Maybe it’s time to face the music?

And accept the fact that you’re seriously unhappy in your job, and nothing will change that.

So you can’t help wondering?

Why not do what many others have done before you? Pursue your dream, follow your passion, become an entrepreneur, and be happy?

If the above describes you, then, yes, you should seriously consider that option.

The following 10 questions will help you to get started

 

1. Do I really want to work for myself?

Is this business or entrepreneurship in general really something you dream about?

Or are you just trying to escape something you don’t like, such as your current boss, your daily commute, or your industry?

If you’re serious about entrepreneurship and following your passion, that’s great. But if you’re just upset with your boss, that is not a good enough reason to quit your job and seek entrepreneurship.

 

2. Am I willing to lose my significant other and alienate my friends and family?

If your partner, friends, and family are not fully behind your pursuit of entrepreneurship, it will strain these relationships, maybe even end them all together.

If you aren’t willing to go through these changes in your relationships, quitting your job to pursue your dreams might not be for you. If you are, you may find that the new relationships you develop are what you had been yearning for all along.

 

3. Will I be able to support myself for a year as a Start Up?

The least risky way into entrepreneurship is what Derek Sivers (Founder of CD Baby) calls The Tarzan Technique.

Stay gainfully employed, start your own business as a side hustle, and quit your current job when you can monetize your business.

Like Tarzan swings through the jungle, don’t let go of the old support until you have a firm grip on the new one, and then keep swinging.

 

4. Am I willing to work 80 hours a week?

Like Lori Greiner said,

“Entrepreneurs are willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week.”

Starting your own business means you have to do whatever it takes, and that is not always fun.

You will face long working hours and sleepless nights, but all that you sacrifice now is only to have more of it in the future.

If this is too much of a detriment for you, getting into entrepreneurship might not be for you, so keep your job.

 

5. Can I live with failure?

Failure is part of the journey to success; just ask any wildly successful person. They have all failed more than once? Nothing to be afraid of.

You might fail, but it’s a chance to learn and just another stepping-stone to your success.

The only real failure is doing nothing simply because you’re too afraid to make a mistake.

After all, what is the worst that can happen? That you may end up exactly where you are right now.
If you cannot live with failure, entrepreneurship is not for you. If you think you can, great.

6. Can job security totally ruin my life?

Many people see staying gainfully employed as a safer choice.

But it’s probably fair to say that if you spend most of your waking hours living in misery in exchange for job security, doing so would ruin your life.

If questionable job security means more to you than pursuing your dream, starting your own business is most likely not a good idea.

 

7. How disciplined am I?

If you want to be your own boss, you must be able to motivate yourself.

This can be difficult, especially at the beginning when customer demands aren’t yet forcing you to be productive.

If you know you lack discipline, quitting your job to pursue your dreams might not be right for you.

 

8. Does my passion fulfill a market need?

Breaking free, chasing your dreams, and following your passion can be a fantastic thing to do, but if your passion has to pay your bills, you need to look at it as a business too? Or you will be broke.

Remember, clients spend money on services that fulfill their own desires. You can only be happy and financially successful by following your passion, one that fulfills a need the market has.

If there is no market for what you’re passionate about, you should not quit your job as it will lead to financial disaster.

9. What do I suck at?

There must be some stuff you?re not so good at. So what is it?
Before you jump into entrepreneurship, you must have the skills to make your business a success.

Close your skill gap, and brush up on social media marketing and the latest trends.

Staying current is critical to your success. If you are completely unaware of what you suck at, you are not ready to start a business.

In a twisted way, knowing what is holding you back is your best recipe for success, in almost everything.

 

10. Are you willing to put your ego aside for your business?

As a young entrepreneur, you must be able to understand and listen to your customers, process feedback, and improve what’s needed, even if it’s very personal.

And despite all the tippy-toe dances, you still have to be the boss.

Make sure your EGO doesn’t get in the way.

It will probably tell you that you know it all (remember #9), kill your objectivity, and give you tunnel vision.

If you can’t control your EGO, you’re not ready for entrepreneurship yet.

 

What’s the Point?

Do you think you’re ready to quit your job to pursue your dreams, follow your passion, and become a successful entrepreneur?

I’d love to tell you that taking the plunge into entrepreneurship is a breeze.

I’d love to tell you that it’s going to be easy.

I’d love to tell you that you can do it between lunch and dinner.

But you already know that I won’t do that, right?

Getting out there and creating a future is a big thing, and it’s hard work. But if you answered “yes” to the questions above, it’ll all be worth it in the end.

    I quit my job this time last year to start my own business as Mindset Coach & Kinesiologist and as much as I’ve loved every moment, it’s also been tough to know that everything is on my shoulders and there is really no such thing as security! But with all the ups and downs I would never have it any other way. Being an entrepreneur is the best job ever 🙂

    Hi

    A good article, that covers a lot of ground. It’s an area close to my heart, as I am a person who has worked for others, worked for myself, and now write, coach, and a wealth of other interesting side hustles.

    In reality, I think the answer to so much of this stuff is genuinely simple. Not easy to do, change, come to terms with….but it IS simple.

    Are you happy, fulfilled, excited, passionate about your life, your work, your relationships, your finances etc?

    People often pour scorn on the ‘follow your passion’ concept, but in reality, what else is there? A life of ‘quiet desperation’ as Henry David Thoreau so aptly put it? This is the life that msot of the world lead, but does that make it right? I think not. Screw it, if someone thinks my only purpose on this planet is to procreate and become a part of the econmy, then I want out. The procreating part can be fun of course, but we are surely on this earth to make a difference to our own lives, and the lives of others, without just being a way of buoying up the GDP figures…surely?

    I know that most people won’t take action, human nature seems to reject the idea of perceived risk and take the middle of the road route, the ‘route to mediocrity’. A road WELL travelled!!

    I agree that if one is unhappy, not enjoying work, not enjoying the passion, freedom and choice you deserve, then it is your DUTY to get the hell out. Do whatever it takes. Work late into the night, get up earlier, stash money away to provide a safety net, get a new relationship, one in which your aspirations and hopes for the future are appreciated and supported. It’s some scary stuff, but the idea of being on my death bed with a tear of regret running down my face is so terrifying it just does not bear thinking about.

    Enjoy this article, get a plan, start small, write books, put them on Amazon Kindle, start to build a business, set a date to ditch the day job, Just do sometthing!

      Like you said “most of this stuff is genuinely simple”. Take a look at your life…do you like what you see…i.e. happiness, passionate about your life, work, relationships, finances, etc? If not, change it; at least try. I have a very cool post coming up on this subject very soon…don’t miss it. Your statement about “making a difference in our own lives and the lives of others” is very close to my own heart, and nothing could be more fulfilling. Let’s all agree…”Just do something!”

3 Simple Hacks That Can Recharge Your Willpower and Help You Perform Better at Work

How many times did you wake up feeling like you could conquer the world? You set ambitious goals for the day, you put on your best attire and walked out the door with a big smile on your face but eventually, life took over. Traffic, emails, work, family, and everything else you have around slowly but steadily started to drain your energy and made you feel exhausted.

You run out of battery, and the only solution that seemed viable was to rely on more caffeine. When that stopped working, all the temptations around you started to look much more appealing, and that sense of drive and commitment you had before slowly faded away. This is you running out of willpower.

Willpower: what is it? Why is it limited?

The American Psychology Association describes willpower as “the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals.” In the book “The Willpower Instinct”, Dr. Kelly McGonigal, explains how every person’s willpower is limited, and slowly depletes throughout the day. The more “willpower challenges” you face, the quicker your reserve drains. Dr. McGonigal divided the different types of willpower challenges you might encounter in three categories:

  • I will: We face this type of challenge whenever we should do something, but we simply don’t feel like getting it done right now.
  • I won’t: We face this challenge when we try to resist temptation, or we try to keep cool in stressful situations.
  • I want: This is a particular type of challenge where we keep track of our long term goals, dreams, and desires. In this instance, we feel like we should take action right now to come one step closer to the goal. 

It’s easy to recognize it when you face a willpower challenge because you literally “feel it in your body.” Imagine being really hungry and walking in front of a bakery. The sight and the smell of pastries quickly triggers an “I won’t” type of challenge, and it takes a severe amount of effort and energy to walk away.

Every time you manage to win one of those challenges, a little bit of your willpower reserve gets used. The more challenges you face daily, the harder it will be to stay true to your goals.

Can you train or recharge your willpower?

A growing body of research suggests that willpower should be considered a muscle. To strengthen it, you should exercise it regularly, but you should not overwork it. Therefore, we shouldn’t try to “be good” at all times. Instead, we should learn how to relax and recharge our willpower.

The general advice on how to improve willpower involves sleep, proper nutrition, and regular exercise. This broad and general recommendation is often not downright applicable by most, because it consists of changing various daily habits. Luckily, three very effective hacks have been discovered, that have an immediate effect on our willpower and take just a few minutes to apply.

Here are the 3 ways to refill your willpower reserves:

1. Focused breathing

Breathing, when done correctly, can stimulate the release of calming hormones while reducing the release of stress hormones like cortisol and catecholamines. To make this effective, you should deeply and slowly inhale through the nose for at least five seconds. Fill your belly with air first, then your chest, and when there’s no more space for air, still try to do tiny inhalations through the nose.

You should feel a pulling sensation around your neck and trapezius muscles. Once your lungs are full, try to hold the breath for five seconds, then slowly exhale through the mouth for at least five seconds. If you repeat this process ten to twenty times, you should feel dramatically more relaxed. Use this method several times a day, especially when you’re experiencing high levels of stress or anxiety.

2. Reward yourself when you accomplish a micro goal

According to a recent study, frequent instant rewards can boost motivation, and therefore, willpower. Creating your own reward system can help you to accomplish your to-do list, and also resist temptations. Since every individual has different tastes, you should come up with creative ideas about the small and frequent rewards you will give yourself upon winning any willpower challenge.

You can see this hack in practice in Apps like the popular Duolinguo, where after completing each lesson you get presented with a chance to open a treasure chest. This rewarding system seems to keep the users much more likely to keep learning new lessons.

3. Taking cold showers

Your body has an autonomic response to cold water. Getting into a cold shower is a difficult (but minor) willpower challenge on its own. As I previously mentioned, winning a willpower challenge strengthens your willpower muscle. Having a morning cold shower, on top of having multiple health benefits, will set you up for a positive winning streak of further challenges.

High performance is the sum of many small habits. Successful people don’t have an unlimited reserve of willpower, but they do have a set of daily rituals that made them succeed. These three hacks are some of the most effective techniques to develop willpower, but some of them may not fit every individual. You should try to find the perfect mix of daily practices that best fits your lifestyle and likes, so that you can strengthen your willpower muscle and perform better at work.
