He has faced the ups and downs of the dotcom boom and bust and has shown through sheer passion and persistence that no matter what, you can achieve greatness if you follow your dreams.

Evan Williams shares his 5 Keys to Entrepreneurial Success for any startup fiend looking at creating something memorable in this world.

Ev Williams Advice For Entrepreneurs

1. Work with Amazing People

Don’t compromise on who you choose to found your company with and hire. Do not put up with ego-centric personalities or downer attitudes.

2. Take on Big Challenges

It’s pretty simple: Hard things are valuable; easy things are not so valuable. Reaching the mountaintop is rewarding because it is hard. If it was easy, everybody would do it.

3. Focus

Say no to most things: Features. People. Partnerships. “Coffees.” Projects. Only a few of them really matter. (Yes, it’s hard to know which.) Don’t get distracted.

4. Take Care of Yourself

When you don’t sleep, eat crap, don’t exercise, and are living off adrenaline for too long, your performance suffers. Your decisions suffer. Your company suffers.

5. Love those Close to You

Failure of your company is not failure in life. Failure in your relationships is.

How To Make Money On Twitter

1. Use Twitter to Crowd Source products

The t-shirt retailer, Threadless, has been using Twitter to ask its followers to submit proposed t-shirt designs for the chance to be paid some cash. The company created a website where people could easily submit their tweets for consideration, and also where people voted for their favorite. The campaign was a resounding success. Threadless received more than 100,000 submissions and over three million votes. More importantly, the company was able to develop and sell 23 designs, creating a new income stream for itself.

You can use this idea to create income opportunities for your business by asking your followers for help with your products, allowing them to make an emotional investment and take part in the creation process. Then you need to reward them for responding.

2. Sell products

Dell Computers made millions by using its @DellOutlet Twitter account to tweet discounts and promotions for Dell computers and other products. They gained over half a million followers and generated over a million dollars in sales in just under two years of tweeting.

You can follow Dell’s lead and make your own followers aware of special deals, discounts and promotions to generate buzz, stimulate sales and make money on Twitter.

3. Generate leads and find customers

Heather Townsend is the author of the book, “The Financial Times Guide to Business Networking.” She started her business networking consultancy right after she had been laid off by her former employer, and claims that 80 percent of her leads had started as followers on Twitter.

Like Miss Townsend, you can nurture relationships you build with your Twitter contacts: offer help to people when they need it, provide answers to questions they may have and contribute useful or interesting information. Then you can capitalize on these relationships by pursuing contacts who may have need of your products and services, converting them into customers.

4. Develop and sell Twitter-related products and apps

UseQwitter.com for example, is a freemium service that performs a single, simple task: it notifies Twitter users when they are unfollowed by their followers. The basic service is free, but the site charges for premium services. The site grew to over 180,000 active subscriptions. The site was then eventually sold to another company, providing the original developers with an additional windfall.

You could identify gaps in Twitter’s service offering and fill that with an app of your own. Your target market will consist of the entire Twitter user base. If your app or service fulfills a pressing need, you could charge people for downloading and using it. You may even create enough interest for investors, and sell your creation for a tidy sum.

5. Tweet for sponsors

SponsoredTweets.com is an online platform that allows you to make money on Twitter by charging sponsors for communicating their advertising messages to your followers. You set the amount you want to get paid for every tweet you make, choose a category and select keywords you want to work with. You then wait for advertisers to contact you and take you up on your offer, paying you the amount you specified for each tweet that you make.

All throughout the process, the tweeter has full control over his or her account, and may choose the wordings of the tweets, or may choose to reject the tweet altogether.

6. Hold a sponsored contest

Holding a Twitter contest is a great way to create buzz, engage your audiences, generate new twitter followers and grow your brand presence. Back in 2010, KFC awarded USD 20,000 scholarships to people who tweeted the most creative answers to the featured question.

Twitter contests have become quite popular. You could ride the wave of this emerging trend and make money on Twitter by organizing contests for local businesses, which will pay you for the service. There are several types of Twitter contests you can set up. You have already seen how KFC solicited the most creative answers. You could select winners through a random draw, organize a photo contest, award users who provide the best answer to questions and much more.

How about 10 million? Or even 22 million?

Adam Ludwin, a Principal at RRE Ventures, along with some developer at BigHuman.com built a side project called “Fame” to make that happen.

Fame is a viral Twitter game that gives a random user a huge follower count once a day.

Here’s how it works: You go to Play-fame.com and connect your Twitter account. You are then entered into a something like a raffle with everyone else who connects on the site. Once a day, a winner is chosen at random. That winner is automatically followed for the day by everyone who has entered.

How is this possible? Twitter’s API actually lets a developer add and remove followers from a user’s account.

Fame will make everyone who enters a follower for the day. Then at the end of the day, those people will stop following the winner. Your account will remain the same after that. You won’t lose any followers, but you might gain some if people like what you say.

Ludwin spoke with Twitter, and it was okay with Fame. It’s smart of Twitter, because this is a way to expand the ecosystem.

Fame launches today, so the first winner will only get a few dozen new followers for the day. Ludwin’s ultimate goal is to give one random Twitter user more followers for a day than Lady Gaga. That would mean Fame has 22 million users.

To reach 22 million, Ludwin needs more and more people to sign up.

Why would you sign up if the odds are slim that you’ll win? Because, you could participate in a community. You could help give some random person a huge audience.

Ludwin is tapping into a populist vein.

“Why do you have to be famous to be famous?” says Ludwin. “Why can’t everyday people be famous?”

Go here to play Fame → & Increase Your Twitter Following

We get it, capturing the essence of your business in 140 characters on Twitter is tough. This is more of a reason to be short & sweet. After searching through a wide array of business Twitter pages, there is a lot of fluff in the bio section that will make most direct their attention back to clicking on their “Home” or “Profile” button and leave the non convincing page that runs with a weak bio behind. Since every word counts, here is how your average human being will react to the following words in a Twitter bio:

“Passionate.” Can you be “passionate” about four or five things? One passion, maybe; four passions are interests, not passions. And really: Can anyone truly be passionate about “delivering lasting customer value” or “teaching small businesses to harness the power of social media” or “providing lasting solutions to common business problems”? Focused, yeah. Driven, sure. Passionate? Save that for your significant other.

“Authority.” As Margaret Thatcher said, “Power is like being a lady; if you have to say you are, you aren’t.” If you have to say you’re an authority, you aren’t. Show your expertise instead. “Speaker at TED Conference” indicates a level of authority. “Social media authority” reads as “I spend way too much time on Facebook.”

“Workaholic.” I suppose the intent is to say, “My nose is to the grindstone 24/7.” If you really do work that much, describe the successes all that effort produced instead. “Workaholic” has negative connotations and implies tremendous effort without tangible results. Potential customers don’t care how much you work — they care about what you get done.

“Guru.” Forget the explanation; I just hate this one. (If you respond positively to “guru,” I would love to know why.) I also hate “sage,” “connoisseur,” “guerilla,” “whiz,” “ninja,” and other allegedly clever descriptors. Don’t be clever for clever’s sake.

“Serial entrepreneur.” A few people start multiple, successful, long-term businesses. They truly are serial entrepreneurs. The rest start one business that fails or does okay, try something else, and keep rinsing and repeating until they find a formula that works. Those people are entrepreneurs. (And there’s nothing wrong with being “just” an entrepreneur!) If you have two or three solid successes under your belt, listing them can be powerful. If not, just say what you do now.

“Technologist.” I found lots of definitions for a technologist. My favorite is, “A person who uses scientific knowledge to solve practical problems.” So: Is that really what you do? Many people who claim to be “technologists” just like cool new products and applications. They’re interested in technology (again, nothing wrong with that!) but they are not technologists. If you use scientific knowledge to solve practical problems, share an example. Otherwise just say, “I love my new iPad 2!”

“Strategist.” Strategists look at the present, envision something different, and develop approaches to make their vision a reality. For example, I sometimes help manufacturing plants improve productivity and quality. There are strategies I use to identify areas for improvement, but I’m in no way a strategist. I don’t create something new; I apply my experience and a few proven methodologies. Very few people are strategists; most “strategists” are actually coaches, specialists, or consultants who use what they know to help others. 99% of the time that’s what customers need — they don’t need a strategist. Be who you are.

“Unique.” We’re all individuals, we’re all different, we’re all unique — and we all know it. If I’m considering hiring you or buying your products, “unique” means nothing to me. Tell me why you are better.

Here’s what catches the eye: Plain language without hyperbole, exaggeration, or fluff.

While expressing personality and flair may work in some cases, if you use Twitter for business purposes plain language and accurate descriptions are what potential followers — and potential customers — really want to see.

With the advent of social networking sites, these are not only used for keeping in touch with friends and family, but as a business portal as well. With over 800 million users worldwide, Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites that have become a portal for online businesses, groups, and personalities. Read on and watch the video by Social Media expert and Millionaire Business Man Gary Vaynerchuk to find out ways you and your business can benefit from the use of Social Media.

By creating a personal account, you can post the products and services that you are selling by creating albums, and indicating the necessary information that describes your product or service. You can also choose to subscribe through their advertising links to increase user views to your profile. Another option is to create a page rather than a personal account. This way, you can showcase your products or services in a more professional manner. Bands, artists, and other types of professional make use of the Facebook page to advertise and showcase their talents, skills, services, and other information.

For a more formal approach, LinkedIn is the perfect medium for advertising your skills as a professional to potential employers. The website is also used as a job portal for those who are seeking employment online. The website works in both ways where a company or employer can post a job opening, and a potential employee or freelancer can post his or her details for other viewers to see.

Social networking sites are also an excellent media for earning money online. Many companies are providing ways for users to earn a few bucks by clicking on paid advertisements for a specified time. Advertising is also an excellent way to increase viewer traffic to your site, but it does not guarantee that people who are viewing your web site or page will actually buy your product or service. Posting links of your web page or blog can also be helpful in increasing your user views. Twitter, MySpace, and other social networking sites are good examples of where you can post links to your products and services for others to see.

Blogging is also an excellent way to earn money. There are many creative and technical writers who are making money from writing user reviews and informative content for various kinds of topics. Digg, for instance, is an online community where people share their thoughts and reviews on movies, music, and anything under the sun. It is also a good place to post links to your personal blogs, online stores, and pages for your products and services.

Multilevel marketing is also increasing in popularity when it comes to social media such as Tumblr, Twitter, MySpace, and others. With this, you will earn commission from every successful referral of the business merchant which has an advertisement on your blog or personal website. With the right tools and knowledge on internet based businesses, it is very easy to earn and be successful online.

5 Good reasons your company should be using Social Media Networks:

A great way to keep track of your peers and colleagues

Easy access to thought leadership or information that can’t be found elsewhere.

A good way to showcase tour company or yourself

Easy access to learning and professional development

You wish to find out what others think of your products, vendors or approachers

A perfect example of Success through Social Media is the man behind Wine Library TV, “Gary Vaynerchuk” who is worth over 60 Million Dollars. He is the Author of “The Thank You Economy” and he lives and breathes through social networks to reach his millions for success. Watch the Video Below as Gary explains why Businesses need to adapt to Social Media, this video is worth every second of your viewing time. I have not been paid by Gary himself to say this, I believe he knows what he is talking about.

I think it’s safe to say that the well known actor in the movie Wall Street & the Hit TV Show “Two & A Half Men” “Charlie Sheen” has been a respected and well admired person for his work in the Entertainment Industry for a long time up until recently. With an onslaught of wild rants about “Winning” and biting several hands that feed him Charlie Sheen seems to be on a downward spiral to rock bottom. Some in their own opinions say that Charlie Sheen is handling business in a creative and impressive way, whereas others state he has lost the plot and there is no coming back.

Checkout our run down of Charlie Sheen’s performance so far and some Advice on how to handle or not to handle your business the Charlie Sheen way.

The Charlie Sheen Way

The Ol’ Bird In Hand Thing:

Seems to me that Sheen is trying to reinvent himself as something of “The Next Hugh Hefner” or “The Next Howard Stern”. Which is fine. Tweaking your brand is not a bad idea…unless you already have a great one going! Sheen was making millions – per episode – in a job that garnered him not only money but a modicum of success and stability. He blew that all away because he was unwilling, or some say unable, to control his erratic behaviour. The lesson here is if you want to reinvent yourself, make sure that you’re not fixing something that just ain’t broken.

Seek Wise Counsel:
Like Tom Cruise before him, Sheen’s public blowout began right after he lost his longtime PR handler. How many of us have been cranked up with what we think is a great idea…only to be brought down to earth by a friend who has a clearer head and less biased perspective. If you are about to do something new or risky, always make sure you run it by someone who’s judgement you trust. Even if you don’t like what they have to say, hear them out and think hard about their advice. They could be saving your business!

Don’t Make Impeded Decisions:
Charlie may think that he’s just fine while high, but his actions clearly show the opposite. Obviously, it’s key to be totally in your right mind any time you make key business- and life-changing decisions. But remember, impeded decision-making doesn’t just come from the effects of drugs and alcohol. Other things like anger, sleepiness, sickness, stress, and distraction influence our ability to think clearly and rationally. And one of those decisions is “stay off TV” unless you’re thinking is totally unimpaired!

Nix The Dirty Laundry:
This one seems obvious. It’d be too easy to dismiss Sheen’s propensity for describing his love life and personal drug habits as just a one-off, very unique celebrity delusion. But it’s not. I have seen too many cringe-worthy business emails from my students and peers in my day. If you miss a deadline, apologize to your clientele, but don’t tell them it’s because you’re going through a divorce. And whatever you do, don’t ever talk trash about a former business associate to a current business associate! Its often more than sufficient to call whatever issue you had with that former partner an “unexpected circumstance” and move on. Resist the urge to spill your guts in a business setting. Save that for your spouse or your therapist!

What can we learn from Sheen’s Online & Marketing strategy?

These lessons may not be useful in all circumstances, but have certainly worked for Charlie Sheen:

Do something big just before you execute your ‘real’ strategy. Do something worthy of online chatter. Once that’s done, you can have a head start once you finally start your social activity.

Be vocal/passionate. Not happy about something? Verbalise it in a way that may cause some shock value but still keep people interested in what you have to say.

Use imagery. Twitpic, yfrog and other services can let you easily show images to the masses. Even if it’s not that interesting sometimes people will already be interested in what you have to share.

Think long-term. The internship is a wonderful example of this. It has its own hashtag (#TigerBloodIntern) and will keep people tweeting for the next few months.

Create a catchphrase that anyone can use. This is a hard one. Whether Sheen fell on this by accident or planned it beforehand, “winning” is a phrase anyone can use, and now the very generic#winning hashtag will be connected to him from now on.

With nearly 4.3m followers on Charlie Sheens Twitter Page and nearly 1.3 million ‘fans’ on his Facebook Page, Sheen has just, conveniently, opened up an online shop at charliesheen.com and has been touring around the US for his own production of stage shows.

8 Helpful Life Tips That Are Not the Charlie Sheen Way:

Be a strong man. Make a decision and stick by it but those decisions should not include becoming “an F-18, bro, and I will destroy you in the air, and I will deploy my ordnance to the ground.”

Be dependable. Look out for the people you care about. Never put your children in a situation using insane public rants to have your children taken from you.

Be honest. You are never wrong if you do the right thing. “Other people cannot be like me because they don’t have tiger blood and Adonis DNA” Accept your mortality and be honest enough to understand we are not bullet proof.

Be a leader. Stay calm cool and collected even in the mist of chaos. Spinning out of control on the drug Charlie Sheen is in no way being in control.

Be responsible. Need The Man Truth say more?

Respect others. Respect yourself and believe others should treat you with respect. “Zero for three.” Addressing his boss, Chuck Lorre, Sheen said, “Your cleanup hitter is on the bench just waiting to spin to win and crush.” Never mind, he just crushed his once boss over the skull with a verbal bat.

Be confident. Take pride in who you are and what you’ve accomplished. Admitting “I’m tired of pretending I’m not special,” he says. “I’m tired of pretending I’m not a total freaking rock star from Mars.” This is not what The Man Truth had in mind.

And finally be sincere. A genuine person is a rare and appreciated. What we have seen is simply a show that lacks anything genuine or sincere.
