Its true that we can make or break our destiny lot of times and one should not accept everything that life offers. However there are circumstances when we actually cannot do anything, it does’nt really mean we deserve to go through those experiences.

Too many people here are trying to apply logic to something that is just free will, all situations can be taken as good or bad and it’s how you react to them is what makes the difference, what I make it out to be is ‘take what your given and make it better’ leave the bullshit science out of it

i very much disagree. like the first example. that kid did exactly what he needed to do and came out of the right lady. that kid had no power or decision in what happened when he was born. so you can’t say he deserves it and a hard working person doesn’t . and when you talk about things like lambo’s the fact is not everyone will be able to own a 300k worth car. no matter how hard you work it is and stays a luxury.

This article goes into a state of oxymoron when it says, ” we are as successful as we deserve” then goes further to say, ” some very hard working and deserving people do not get the breaksvthat others get”

Wow! Interesting thoughts. I think some of the commentators are confusing success and circumstances. Many people have overcome their circumstances to achieve success; some people let their circumstances dictate what level of success they can achieve. More often than not, we didn’t do anything to “deserve” our circumstances, but how we choose to react to the circumstances leads to what we deserve.

I think the word Deserve is a bit harsh, almost like it’s a punishment. Nobody “deserves” to live on the streets or be poor etc. If you had said we are responsible for where we are, then it would have been more appropriate. Now for the kid with the lambo, he doesn’t “deserve” it cause he didn’t do as you say..what it takes to earn it. So being born into a rich family don’t mean anything. If I’m born into a poor family, doesn’t mean I deserve to be poor.

I understand your intent, and I even personally agree with your thoughts here. The buck stops with me. I am responsible – even when I’m not to blame. However, something in me aches a little when I hear (or write) things in such black and white. There’s a lot of grey in our experience. For the grieving woman who’s lost her child – for the person whose home was destroyed by a tornado – for the gravely ill who took great care of their bodies. – for the little boy who is beaten by his father – for the little girl who has been sold into sex slavery (there are MANY, even here in the US)… I could go on and on. There are seasons in our lives when an ‘undeserved’ crisis is thrust upon us.

I’m not knocking this article. I appreciate the kick in the pants, and I write on similar topics myself, so I’m aware of the struggle to find the balance… But I do believe it’s not quite as cut and dry as we sometimes think. Though I agree in theory, I don’t think this article can be true 100% of the time.

Why don’t you go on saying all that romantic stuff to some miserable kid born in Africa? I’m sorry, but the human life course is a little more determinsitic than what you’re presenting here.
Not anyone can elevate their status – that’s a fact, and sure as hell all these people won’t be feeling happy about their incapability to do so.

A very insightful story. This is one that I will be sharing with some of my clients. We need to understand that where we are is as a result of what we have done. It’s easy to point the finger at society, but if you take the time to accept and learn from your situation, the solution to a better way will materialize itself. Yes it may be on a “road less traveled” but know that you will be a better person as a result of it and “earn” the right to say so.

Where we are in life is a consequence of what we think of ourselves – our concept of Self. Our outer world mirrors our inner world. There is no one to blame for where we find ourselves at this particular moment in time. When we take responsibility for the circumstances of our life it is then we can begin to effect the change we wish to see in our present reality.
